Crash on Load Document - Table Corrupt KBA 328232

NOTE: I can't put my email address on here, as this site
is used as a SPAM email address farm.

I have previously referenced the KBA (subject line) that
specificly identifies my problem. MS Word 2002 crashes
when I open the document, after telling me that "A" table
in the doc is corrupt. I have followed all the advice
given to no avail. WILL MS SUPPORT THIS PRODUCT ... OR
NOT ? IT IS LESS THAN 1 YEAR OLD!!!

No they won't unless you specifically pay for support. Here you get support
for free if you ask.

Hi Allen,

Perhaps I'm not following something here but the KB article notes
there is a free fix available. :)

All you need to do is contact MS Support and tell them you are calling
in regards to obtaining the hotfix referenced in KB328232. A hotfix is
free and you should not be charged. I've called to obtain several
hotfixes in the past and was never asked for payment and was provided
the hotfix immediately.

If in the US you can call: 1-800-936-4900, if outside the US take a
look at: http://microsoft.com/worldwide. Note that when obtaining a
phone number you need to use the Advanced support option - not the
Basic. Again, if you see fees disregard them. You will not be charged
to obtain the hotfix described in the KB article.

Now I'm sure your next question will be why you need to call and
obtain the hotfix. :) I don't know for sure, there are various valid
reasons but in this case I suspect the hotfix will soon be rolled into
a patch which will eventually be made available for download. However
rather than making a customer wait for a needed fix they are making
the individual fix available to those who need it immediately.

Also note you are posting to usenet - not a private newsgroup such as
Google or Yahoo. Unfortunately in the past few weeks those who created
the Swen virus found they could obtain a wealth of email addresses
from usenet. Those of us who previously did not use a munged email
address (and did so for many years) also found themselves under
attack. Most of us now munge our email address and those who don't
should munge their email address when posting.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

OK,

I have a document, that has recently been editted with MS
Word 2002, the program has corrupted this file and a
couple of others. Much editting has been lost, this
information is important. Word crashes instantly after
issuing a "corrupt table" message, then loops trying to
recover the document ... which never works.

The corruption apparently results from a table within a
table, something the code allows you to do, then chokes
on it ... later.

How can I recover these documents? KBA 328232 says there
is a fix, but doesn't provide a link to it. Perhaps they
supply it to MVPs? Can someone provide it to me, please?

Allen

P.S.

Nobody likes an arrogant gorilla, either MS supports
folks that pay them $, or 10 years from now, they will
look back and wonder why they became the new "IBM". The
code they are releasing is barely BETA quality, certainly
not commercial quality, and light years from production
quality. I realize few, if any, know the difference
between the last two.

Thanks Beth,

The concept of contacting MS support, always presented
visions of seperating me from $125. No clear path was in
the KBA was indicated, and I spent 15 minutes in web
navigation that began with the KBAs instructions for
getting the fix. As you know, there are about a hundred
cheap ways to make this patch/utility easy to get.

I appreciate your help, and will try your suggestions.

re: "phone number you need to use the Advanced support
option - not the Basic. Again, if you see fees disregard
them. You will not be charged to obtain the hotfix
described in the KB article."

This is quite counter intuitive, but I rely on your
expertise. Can I just call the phone number, or do I
have to do something else first, to use "the Advanced
support option".

re: usenet, MS using something standard, there is a first
for everything. Too bad millions of people are being
hacked, via trying to get MS support, and MS doesn't
appear to care. If they threw a few mill (MS chump
change) at this, got the German, Dutch and a couple other
governments to give a few of these 'hackers' some serious
prison time, it would be a lot less attractive to
others. These people (hackers) are terrorists, make no
mistake about it.

Many Thanks,
Allen

Hi Allen,

We've recently brought this to Microsoft's attention and I believe
they are working on the wording. Hopefully we'll see some clarity in
the near future.
I appreciate your help, and will try your suggestions.

All you need to do is call the phone number and request the Hotfix
referenced in KB328232. If you live in the US call 1-800-936-4900.
This is the number I use to obtain a hotfixes. I don't necessarily
need all of the hotfixes I've obtained - the main reason I call is to
experience the difficulties or ease of the process. ;-) So far it has
all been fairly easy and much to my surprise MS support has been very
helpful and friendly. (I may be an MVP but that doesn't mean I'm a MS
evangelist! <g>)

Now if you are outside the US then post back first. I recently learned
in some countries the phone call is a cost as there isn't a free
number to call.
re: usenet, MS using something standard, there is a first

The web interface on the MS site is relatively new. Primarily it was
created so those behind corporate firewalls could access the
newsgroups.
Too bad millions of people are being
hacked, via trying to get MS support, and MS doesn't
appear to care.

I know you may find this hard to believe but they *do* care. :)

They are currently in the process of deploying a new UI that allows
for an anonymous email address when posting. The Windows community is
currently using the new web interface if you want a peek at what will
eventually be available for the Office community (check out the New
Post/Reply) form:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsser...px?dg=microsoft.public.windows.server.general

Let us know how things turn out. :)

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

Beth,

I meant to say $245, in the previous post, Expresso in
Seattle has gone up I guess;~).

Pleasantly suprised at MS support phone call, only in the
queue for a few minutes. The patch distribution has
been 'approved', the 'research team' will get back with
me within 2 business days. Fingers crossed that I can
download the patch on a dialup.

I still plan on migrating to Open Office, the concept of
having the source code available for review by thousands
of programmers, makes me feel a lot more comfortable. I
feel that if MS code was made available for public
review, we would be suprised that it works as well as it
does. Not meant to be jab at MS, all big code shops have
the same problem. It's why we don't have SDI (Strategic
Defense Initiative) a/k/a 'Star Wars' working.

Thanks again,
Allen
