Crash on startup of Excel from Office 2008 - Clean install

Hi folks, I was wondering if I could get some help with an issue I have with
Excel from Office 2008.

Upon launch, Excel crashes with the following error report (attached). This
is after a clean install of office 2008. I've tried removing office
completely (including the folders that the uninstaller does not remove) and
reinstalling it with no success. Excel is the only program that's exhibiting
this problem.

Additionally, excel does NOT crash if it is started by double-clicking an
existing xls file. However, even once it is running choosing File -> New
Workbook causes the same crash.

I've tried removing the font cache, and checking to ensure that there are no
corrupted fonts.

Any suggestions? I feel like I'm running into a brick wall with this one.

Hi Cold, can you try to hold "shift" when launching XL? Hold it until XL is fully launched. If this doesn't work, can you try hold "shift" when login into account? Let me know what happens...

I had the same problem and did what you suggested.
Excel is working when you open with hold shift key.

What does that mean?

Hi,
Did some research.

It seems if you delete the com.microsoft.Excel.plist file under your Home directory/library/preferences and start your Excel with holding down the shift key and quit excel and start excel normally, it seems to solve the issue.

Hope fully it will not resurface again.

Holding shift while Excel starts just gives the same result - the
EXC_ARITHMETIC crash.
Similarly, holding shift when logging in to the account and then starting
Excel crashes the same way.
Logging in while holding shift, then starting Excel while holding shift
still crashes.
Finally, deleting com.microsoft.Excel.plist, then starting Excel with shift
pressed still crashes.

However, I do have some new information - this crash happens only for one
user on the system - other users can log in and start Excel with no issues.

Hi Cold, holding "shift" while logging in should "bypass" your current user preferences. Theorectically, it's the same results as logging in as a new user. Can you please try it again?

Another thing you can try is to run the "font book" to check corrupted/duplicate fonts. Please try and report back.
