Crash when I type a certain phrase

N

Ned Wilson

This seems really bizarre, but... with MS Word XP SP2,
every time I try to type the phrase "paroxymal atrial
fibrillation" Word crashes as soon as I hit the "f"
in "fibrillation". I've tried it six times, with three
reboots of my computer, as well as doing a "Repair
Microsoft Office" from Control Panel - Add & Delete
Programs. Since I'm trying to type a medical record
review, this is extremely vexing. I've sent error reports
to Microsoft after most of the crashes, but no suggestions
have come back. Anyone have a clue what's happening or
how to stop it?

This could be caused by a corrupt AutoCorrect file or proofing tools
file.

To rule out AutoCorrect go to Tools/AutoCorrect and turn off "Replace
text as you type".

To rule out the dictionary, go to Tools/Options/Spelling and Grammar
and turn off "Check spelling as you type" and "Check grammar as you
type".

If you find the problem to be either of the above post back and we'll
go from there.

It stopped when I turned off "check spelling as you type".

Thanks! Now - any suggestions about how to fix that?

Did you add any of these words (atrial for example) to your Custom
dictionary? Search for *.dic (could be Custom.dic depending on how
Word was installed) and rename it OldCustom.dic.

You can create a new dictionary either through Tools/Options/Spelling
and Grammar or by adding a word not found in the dictionary.

You *might* be able to recover the added words from your OldCustom.dic
by opening it in the Notepad and copying the contents. Then open your
new custom dictionary and paste. Make sure you don't have any blank
lines at the beginning or end of the file.

If that isn't it then check \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\Proof for mssp2en.dll and mssp2en.lex (file name could vary
depending on the language you are using) and rename both files. Then
Repair Office in Add/Remove Programs or extract new files from the
installation CDs.
