Crash when importing EPS with TIFF Preview

E

Evan Jones

Hello,

This appears to be an issue that dates back a few years. I'm currently
using Office 2004. In any office application, if I try and insert an EPS
file that has a TIFF preview embedded in it, the Office application
crashes. This seems strange to me, because:

A) If I use an EPS with a monocolour (1-bit colour) TIFF preview, it works.
B) The TIFFs by themselves work.
C) The EPS by themselves work.
D) Office for Windows successfully displays the TIFF preview.

Is there any way that I can report this bug to Microsoft? I have a good
collection of EPS test files that I can submit. Are there any workarounds,
besides not using TIFF previews?

Thank you,

Evan Jones

There are many variations of .eps files that it could be choking on. They
can have a transparent or opaque background, for example. In addition, some
apps (PC Photoshop I think) even asks if you want to save it for Mac or PC,
although honestly I don't know what it does different. Perhaps some
encoding.

Personally, I've had the most trouble (on both platforms) with .eps files
generated from Quark.

Sorry if I've not solved your problem, but unfortunately .eps is not a
consistent format.

Regards,
Mark

The difference between "Mac EPS" files and "PC EPS" files is the format of
the bitmap preview embedded in the file. The issue heer is that I am
creating the EPS files myself, in a program that I wrote. Without the
preview, my EPS files work fine in Office. With the preview, hey work fine
on Office for Windows, and in native Mac OS X applications like Preview or
OmniGraffle, but they crash Office for Mac.

At any rate, my searching has revealed that this has been an issue with
the last couple of version of Office on Mac OS X. I'll take this as a sign
that this won't be fixed soon/ever, and I'll move on.

Thanks for your help,

Have you verified that it works with other "known" format such as
illustrator, freehand, or photoshop .eps files? That could help you isolate
it to your application's file handling--in case it it suspect.

Good luck
