Entourage crashes every time I click and drag a contact from a GROUP window (trying to move the contact to a NEW Group window).

I have found nothing on this problem in web searches. Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions.

It could be database corruption. To test, create a new Identity in Entourage
and see if the problems exist in a new Identity. Export your contacts using
File --> Export --> Entourage archive (.rge) file. Import the file into the
new Identity for testing. If it works, then you need to rebuild.

Make a duplicate in the Finder first as additional backup. A rebuild does
make a duplicate, but sometimes in the process the original and backup get
merged resulting in total disaster. It's rare but it happens.

How to rebuild:

Thanks Diane for the quick response.

As you suggested, I created a new Identity, imported my Contacts via .rge archive file, and created a new Group in the new Identity using the same contacts from the problem Group.

Unfortunately the same error occurs. I highlight a contact in the Group, click to drag and when it moves one pixel, Entourage quits with error.

Does this mean I need to rebuild the database?

No, it means the problem is most likely in your User's folder. Go to System
Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by
logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Do the same test there. If it
works, then the problem is in your User's folder.

I did this and the problem unfortunately persists. In the new User account, I created a new Entourage Group, manually entered an email address, re-opened the Group and tried to click and drag....causes a quit.

Not sure where to go from here...re-install? Thanks for your help.

Let's try download the Apple combo updater first. It never hurts and is an
easy quick fix. Just think of it as refreshing all your system files. If
that doesn't work we'll do the reinstall.

Download the combo updater from Apple and run it again rather than using
Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially problem-causing files.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they¹re applying‹no need
to roll back or do a clean install.

Tiger:

Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (Intel)

<http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411updateintel.html>

Follow these steps to reinstall:

Original DVD.

* Under Help in the Menu bar, select Check for updates. When the MAU shows
up in the Dock, select Keep in Dock. Then quit
* Quit all Microsoft applications (Easy way: log out/in with Shift key down
to disable any startup items.) Be sure all applications are quit before
running updater. IMPORTANT that you do this with each update.
* Drag the Microsoft Office 2008 folder to the Trash.
* Empty Trash.
* Reinstall Office 2008 from your original installation disk.
* Restart
* Select MAU from Dock and update the MAU.
* Restart
* Select MAU from Dock. Update to 12.1.0
* Restart (restarting before you launch any app is important!)
* Update to 12.1.5
* Restart

Newer DVD that comes with SP1 12.1.0 installed.

Follow these steps to reinstall:

* Under Help in the Menu bar, select Check for updates. When the MAU shows
up in the Dock, select Keep in Dock. Then quit.
* Drag the Microsoft Office 2008 folder to the Trash.
* Empty Trash.
* Reinstall Office 2008 from your original installation disk. Be sure all
applications are quit.
* Restart
* Update to 12.1.5 (be sure you have quit all applications first)
* Restart

If both the combo and reinstall fails, it's time to do an "Archive &
Install".
