crashes a few seconds after opening.

i have win xp home and ms word 2002. when opening the program, it functions
fine for about 30 seconds then i get the following message...

microsoft word has encountered a problem and needs to close. we are sorry
for the nconvenience.

so far all i've done is to rename the normal.dot file and renamed the
following directory in the
registry....HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version
number\Word\Data

any help would be appreciated

Are you using a network printer but aren't connected to the network?
Or depending on the printer you are using is your printer turned on?

If that isn't it then are you doing anything during the 30 seconds
before it crashes? IOW have you started typing or have you clicked a
menu or button on a toolbar?
