Crashes on launch

Machine is an iBook (G3, dual-USB, 600) running Panther. Something
seems to be corrupting the preferences such that any attempt to launch
any Office app freezes during startup (specifically, it can't get past
the screen saying "Configuring Office Preferences" newline "Microsoft
Excel." Not only can you not quit the app (not even by force quit),
but it usually forces two restarts (the first gives a kernel panic).

Something more than a problem with Preferences is going on - that
should never pervent you from force quitting, much less give a
kernal panic.

First thing I would do is run First Aid from the Disk Utililty after
booting from the Panther install CD.

Was there anything unusual about your installation of Panther or
Office?
