Crazy font problem

C

Clyde Soles

When I open Word 2004 (11.3.5), it is now telling me that most of my fonts
are corrupt. I literally have to hit the Enter key over one thousand times
as it identifies each font. Until this is done, the program is dead in the
water. But the fonts work fine in my other programs (Adobe InDesign, etc)
and on my printer! Only Word thinks there is anything wrong and it even
prints them when told. If I quit Word, it seems to remember that I wasted 15
minutes hitting the Enter key. But then it forgets after I restart the
computer.

Any solutions? TIA

Yep. have a look at Beth's article at
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/CorruptFontErrors.html

Font handling in Word is a ragged mess for some.
Good luck, and please report back what worked and what didn't.

I have another problem with Word 2004 and fonts. I use paid copy of
Adobe Garamond Pro, but Word refuses to use it.
I try to make it default font, but Word changes to New Times Roman
immediately.
How to make it obedient?
Removal of New Time Roman from the fonts folder or reinstalling Word
does not help.

Does Adobe Garamond Pro appear in the font menu in Word?
What about in the font menu of some other Carbon application like
GraphicConverter (double click the A in the toolbox)

I get some, but not all Open Type Fonts hiding from Word on one of my
Macs too. Myriad, Warnock Pro and Minion Pro are on extended holiday
at the moment. Yet Garamond Premier Pro and Gill Sans STD for instance,
are fine.

I suspect something in OS X's font handling in carbon apps is broken.
Like giving up after n otfs. (The fonts on holiday here all have names
starting late in the alphabet.)

So I too would like an answer to your question.

I assume you guys have re-built both font caches?

See
<http://www.coolosxapps.net/2007/06/05/fontnuke-remove-corrupt-font-cache-fi
les/>

1) Delete the font caches

2) Do a power-off reboot of OS X.

When starting from a power-up, OS X rebuilds its font cache. Office then
rebuilds its font cache from the OS X cache.

If you have a large number of fonts enabled, expect the first Office
application to take a very long time to start when it is rebuilding its font
cache.

Hope this helps

1) Delete the font caches Been there, done that
2) Do a power-off reboot of OS X. Got the T-shirt

Oh yes. You wanna see the other T-shirt?
Hope this helps
I blame Apple for this one. I have battled it long and hard.
I'm waiting to see if Leonard improves things.
I'm pretty sure that if I want to use Warnock Pro, all I have to do is
scrub a few more otf fonts. It used to work when I had fewer fonts
enabled.
