create a new e-mail address

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel
Email Client: pop

I want to create a new e-mail address and eventually phase out my old address. I will contact the people I normally e-mail to alert them to this change. What do I do about people/companies that have my old e-mail address on file? I'd rather not have to check 2 accounts. Is there a way to link the two e-mail addresses so that I see all of my messages when go to the inbox for my new e-mail address?
