Hi, all,

I have a resource working on serveral tasks in a project. These tasks may
last 3 months long but only few hours work needed for each task. when he do
what is flexible. How can I create a task with fixed start and finish date?
For example, following attributes:
- Duration: 4 hours
- Start date: 1th Nov.
- End date: 31th Dec.

Thanks in advance,

Hi, you cannot have both a fixed start and finish date, you can only fix one.
In your instance, I would create the task with the fixed start date, and a
duration of say 3 months, with work equating to say 4 hours.

Hi, Ben,

It will be good if works. The issue is I can not seperately define Duration
and work, they seem linking together. As your sample, I created a task that
start on fixed date, with 3mos duration. I insert work field into file, but
when I enter 4 hours into work field, the duration will be changed to
0.07Mons.
Would you like give more details that how can I create a task for 4 hours
work in 3months duration?

Thanks in advance,

JJin

Hi, Ben,

Yes, tasks has been assigned to a resource. Do you mean I should adjust work
by specifying the [%]usage of this resource when assign this kind of tasks?
In my case, this resource[100%] is shared by lot of tasks. All these tasks
are few hours or few days work which will be happend in next 3 months but
without interdependancy eachother. The PM do not want to specify the units
for each task and leave big flexibility to resources.
So, can I create a task with Fixed Duration, Fix Work and Fixed Units?

Thanks in advance,

You need to understand the scheduling formula = work = units * duration. Are
you assigning a resource to the task?

What works for our organization is to set the Tasks to Fixed Duraiton
and Non Effort Driven. Then you can set the task duration to 3 mo and
the effort to 4 hours.

Okay, insert the task type column and work column in a view. Set the task to
be fixed duration, and manually enter the duration and work. The units will
be calculated for you. You can also easily set these items in the split view
(right click on the chart area within the gantt chart view and select split.
