create an Instructor's Manual with notes

I would like to add notes to a User Manual. The notes are for the
Instructor's manual only. The Student manuals will not contain them. But, I
need to be able to print and update the manuals (and notes) and need the page
numbers to match (e.g. if the back of every page of the Instructor Manual is
devoted to notes, the main body text page numbering matches the Student
Manual).

The Student manuals are printed on both sides. Is there a way to insert
notes for an Instructor (which would double the size of their document) but
retain the page numbers and layout?

First type all the note material just like the ordinary text. Use hard
page breaks or "Page break before" paragraph formatting to separate
the pages as needed.

Go to Format > Style (in Word 2002 or 2003, Format > Styles and
Formatting). Click the New button. Create a new character style --
that is, click the Style Type dropdown and select "Character" instead
of "Paragraph". You might name the new style Instructor Notes or
something like that. Leave the rest of the dialog as is, so the
description under the sample just says "Default Paragraph Font +".

Apply this character style to all of the note material. That won't
change the appearance of the text at all. You can print the instructor
manual now.

To print the student manual, go back to Format > Style, select the
Instructor Notes style, and click Modify. (In Word 2002 and 2003,
that's on the dropdown menu from the right side of the style's name.)
Set the font color to white.

If the instructor notes contain any pictures, you'll have to select
them and, using the buttons on the Picture toolbar, set them to
maximum brightness and minimum contrast -- that makes them white, too.

Print the document. Go back and set the font color in the style to
black or Automatic (and restore the pictures if necessary).

As an aside, you can't use the Hidden text attribute for this job,
because Hidden text collapses and changes the page layout.
