Create links for ALL shapes when exporting to database: Why not?

I have the unenviable task of translating 200+ Visio 2003 drawings from
Japanese to English. After struggling with the task of opening each file,
one-by-one, and translating the text for each shape, I discovered the Link to
Database function...

"Woo hoo!" I thought, "This will be a lot easier!" So, I created a macro to
import all drawings into one master VSD file as separate pages with the
thought of then exporting & linking all the shapes to a database (an Excel
DSN in this case). This way, I could translate all the text in one file,
update the shapes in the master VSD file, and then export each page to a
separate file at the end.

But then I realized: Visio doesn't generate links between shapes and the
database during the export process!!!?! What, I'm supposed to manually create
each and every link?! It seems obvious that creating the links DURING the
export process would save a lot of time over having to manually create the
links to the database after exporting. (What genius came up with that idea?!)

There are over 200 shapes in each Visio drawing, and I need to create links
for all of them! Unfortunately, I do not have time (deadlines, you know) to
develop another macro to automatically create the links for me so I won't use
the Export and Link to Database functions this time around.

I am really disillusioned with MS because they didn't think of this
(something so obvious and straightforward) when developing the export/linking
functions! QUESTION: Is there no other way to create links than to select
each shape, one-by-one???!

Your input is appreciated.
