Create numbered lists and make them restart with each new instance

I have found instructions on how to use VB to make simple
numbered lists restart when you have a new instance of the
list in a document, but can't find instructions on how to
do this with the style options. How can I do that?

a.
b.
c.
1.
2.
3.
d. (I want this to be a)
4. (I want this to be 1)

Would it be possible to see a document set up like this?
There are so many settings and I keep getting lost when I
get down to base level on style and then choosing Bullets
& Numbering type. I just keep getting lists that won't
start over again. I don't need outline numbering, just
simple numbered lists.

If you have lists with more than one level (which your previous example
implied, but perhaps I misread it), then you *do* need outline numbering.
See http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html. If
you've just got a 1,2,3 list here and an a,b,c list there and then another
1,2,3 somewhere, then I find that in Word 2002/2003, just right-clicking and
choosing Restart Numbering works quite dependably.
