Create template before writing content

I'd like to write a technical book; and as a basis use a table of content as
a structure and a "reminder". Thus, I'd like to creat a TOC before starting
to write, and later use it as an automated numbering.... possibel?
Of course, I could creat a "manual" TOC, and after having written the book
create the "real" TOC, but I'm sure there is a way around.
Office 2002 or 2003 (have two computers).
Thanks,

Sure. All you need to do is add your main headings and secondary headings in
a document and format them using the Heading 1 - Heading 9 styles. Then
insert a TOC based on the styles. As you develop the content you can
right-click the TOC and use "Update Fields" to update it to the current
content.

If you need specifics, such as where to find the styles or TOC we need the
version of Word you are using.
