ks2008,
Project's WBS field is a dual-mode field, that is Project will
automatically populate it as the plan is developed but the user can
change it if necessary.

So, to answer your first question, yes, you can change it. With regard
to your question on how to change it there are various ways. First, you
could manually type over the WBS field either as the plan is developed
or after is is fully developed. A tedious process, but simple and
effective. This could either be done in the WBS field itself or in a
spare text field which you can relabel as "WBS". A second method may be
more appropriate for large files or files that are likely to see a
number new tasks added as the plan is executed. That method involves
developing a VBA procedure to "read" a criteria, (e.g. task name), and
then applying an appropriate WBS code.

Hope this helps.

In addition to John's wise advice, you can get automatically create
the code you desire through a custom WBS mask.

Add the WBS field and then choose Project > WBS > Define Code

Add a project code prefix of A
Level 1 Uppercase Letters (ordered) Any length with a - separator
Level 2 Numbers (ordered) with 3 as length

Leave the options "Generate WBS Code for New Task" and "Verify
uniqueness of new WBS codes" selected.

If you modify the task list, choose Project > WBS > Renumber to have
Project automatically renumber the custom WBS code.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Julie,
I wouldn't say my advice was "wise" since I missed the obvious. Thanks
for jumping in with a better option.
