Create xbar-symbol

The xbar-symbol (x with a bar over it!) is a common
symbol for the central value of a sample selected from a
population or sample space. Can this symbol be created
with Word? Alternatively, where can it be found?
Thanks and regards,
JWM

Have you checked the "Insert" -> Symbol options?

Hi J.W.,

You can use an eq-field:

{eq \o(x,¯)}

Create the field braces with Ctrl+F9. You can type the ¯ with Alt+0176
(hold down the Alt-key, type 0 1 7 6 on the numeric keypad).

Regards,
Klaus

Thank you Klaus! I am not the original poster and I knew how to produce the
x-bar symbol with the Equation Editor but not by using a Field Code. I have
to admit to very little familiarity with field codes but one is never too
late to learn! As far as I am concerned, it was news to me that Help would
actually give a response to "eq".

By the way, it's ALT+0175 on the US keyboard (g).

On the German keyboard, too <g>

I use Alt+0176 for the degree sign so often that my fingers must have
slipped into the old routine...

Klaus

JW, there are already some good posts in this thread, but I wanted to
add another suggestion. Create the x-bar with Word's Equation Editor
(Insert | Object | Microsoft Equation 3.0), then add it to AutoCorrect
so that simply typing the characters xb (or another shortcut of your
choosing), followed by any punctuation character, Enter key, or
spacebar, will enter x-bar for you. We have a tutorial on our web site
about using MathType and Equation Editor with AutoCorrect, so you may
want to refer to this tutorial if you find this suggestion useful. You
can read the tutorial at
