How can I remove a box that appears when I try to draw a line and there is no
button in the drawing toolbar for one to remove it.

Tools | Options | General: clear the check box for the drawing canvas.

Thank you, you saved the day. My options didn't say canvas, it said drawing
objects so I unchecked it and it worked.....

Are you sure? The drawing canvas was introduced in Word 2002, and the option
in both 2002 and 2003 says, "Automatically create drawing canvas when
inserting AutoShapes." The only "Drawing objects" check box is on the Print
tab of Tools | Options.
