make sure the document you are working in is .docx file, rather than in compatibility mode. The Bibliography function does not work in that format.

do a "save as" and make sure you select ".docx" as your file extension. Once you've done that the Insert --> Document Elements --> Bibliographies menu item will ungray.

Cheers

Does the word pre=ocessor enable the maintainance of a bibliography library?

Hi Rizwi,
I'm not sure I completely understand what you're asking, but Word does allow
you to manage the citation sources stored in particular documents as well as
a master list, which is stored in an XML file.

You can add, delete, and edit the sources. You can even have the same source
in both a document and the master list with differences (so you can tweak it
for a specific paper, if desired). When you make a change in a source and
update the bibliography and citations in the document the changes you made
are reflected in the document.

I hope this answers your question.

Thanks,

Curt

I am trying to create a bibliography and have followed the instructions above which ask that the file be saved as a docx file. I have done that, but I only see the cites show up one after the other in the document only separated by a semicolon. Is there a significant step that I have missed? I just want to create a bibliography for the work cited in a paper I am working on. Does the bibliography show up in another document?

sitome,

Here is what you need to do if you are using Office 2008

Under the INSERT menu click DOCUMENT ELEMENTS. Then click BIBLIOGRAPHY. It will then allow you to chose if you want a "work cited" or "bibliography" page. And when you click on the box that shows you the sample of what it would look like, it will add the work cited where ever your cursor is. I know its confusing if you don't know the layout of office 2008. It took me a few times! HA

Hope that helps

Thanks for this advice. How did you know to do this? Are there instructions anywhere? I find "Help" useless.

I cannot find where I have the option to choose Works Cited. All I see is Bibliographies. What am I missing?

Hi Hannah:

Make sure you are allowing your Help to go "online". The Help wasn't ready
when they burned the Office 2008 disk, so the good stuff is all online, and
they are adding to it every day.

The Help is actually sucking its content from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/help.mspx?app=4

You can look at that in any browser if you prefer.

Hope this helps

Please ignore my previous question. I found Works Cited-- but it wasn't easy.
