Creating a letterhead in Word X

C

Clint O'Conner

I'm trying to create a letterhead template in Word X, and I can't get it to
come out right.

I want to have my company logo and name at the top of the first page; and
something else (or nothing) on subsequent pages.

I could put the logo in a "first page only" header - but then it is "grayed
out" when viewed on screen - which looks terrible.

Next attempt: I created a template that has my company logo at the top of
the first page (not in a header). It looks nice and bright, but then the
logo appears at the top of every subsequent page too - which I don't want.

Any suggestions for how to make a letterhead that will have my logo on the
first page only, and which will not be grayed out when viewed on-screen?

If your created logo is appearing at the top of every page without you
putting it there, I think you must have it anchored in the header or
something. It wouldn't do that if it weren't linked to the header. Try
turning on different first page again.

Failing that, see if this page helps:

Thanks for the reply.

The logo appears on every page when I use it in a TEMPLATE.

If I put the logo in a "first page only" header, it only appears on the first
page - but it is "grayed out" because it is in the header. This is not
acceptable appearance for letters that I will send electronically (i.e. not
on paper).

To recap: Is there a way to create a letterhead in Word that has a logo on
the first page only, and the logo is NOT grayed out because it is in the
header?

Hi Clint,

As far as I can tell, the answer is no. The only way I can see to
accomplish what you want is to leave the logo off the template and then
insert it manually on the first page whenever you need it there.

You might want to submit this to Microsoft as a feature request. Click
Feedback on the help menu (in Office X) or go to this URL:

I think you should have the logo in the template as part of a first
page header.

I do that all the time and it works a treat. I even have templates
where I have follow on logo (littler and with just the logo and not all
the malarkey of phone number and adress and all. And other templates
for double-sided printing where the logo only appears on the left of
each spread.
Start by setting your template up with two pages. The first being
special of course.

Let me tell you how I did it, then the other J. McG. can come along and
tell you why you should never, ever do this:

1) In a new document, create (at least) two paragraphs.

2) Format your header the way you want it for the second page. When
that's complete, click on the Different 1st page control on the
header/footer toolbar. Delete everything but the paragraph mark from the
1st page header.

3) Direct format the first page header paragraph setting to 96 pt space
after. Adjust more or less for your logo, but this gives about 2" at the
top if your header margin is set at 0.5"

4) Return to the document proper. Select the first paragraph. Create a
new style (I named mine "MyHiddenLogo"). Modify the font to be hidden,
with a font size of 1 pt. Apply it to the 1st paragraph.

5) Leaving the cursor in the 1st paragraph, insert your logo as a
picture.

6) Select the picture, ctrl-click and choose format picture.

7) In the Size tab, adjust the size if necessary.

8) In the Layout tab, select wrapping style in front of text, then click
Advanced.

9) In the Picture Position tab, set the horizontal and vertical
alignment relative to Page. In the options section, only check the Lock
Anchor checkbox.

10) Exit the format picture dialog.

11) Save as a template.

Now you'll see your logo in living color in page layout view, but it
won't print (since the paragraph style is hidden text).

The biggest danger I see is that you can still move the cursor to the
first paragraph. If you have fields (e.g., date, subject, address) in
your second and subsequent paragraphs, it seems unlikely to me that
this will be a big problem.

However, I'll wait for John to tell me why I'm wrong.

Okay, J.E., I just *had* to try this. And it works! Except for one thing
(which Clint didn't specify so for his purposes it probably doesn't matter
anyway)...

Let's say you want not only the different first page logo to be
not-greyed-out but also the second page (etc.) header to be not-greyed-out
when viewed on screen :)?

Not *everything* I post is broken, Beth...

In that case, I suspect you'd be out of luck without resorting to macros.

Yeah. Place the logo in the first Section of the document, tightly
encapsulated in section breaks set to "Continuous". Apply Tools>Protect
Document... Protection to only that section so you can't type in it.

It's a bit clunky, in that the cursor will go into the protected section, it
just won't allow you to do anything in there. But the letterhead will
appear, it will be on the first page only, and it will not be greyed out.

You will then need to se the margins very small, and perhaps anchor the
letterhead in a floating text box that you drag into the correct position
overlapping the header.

Hope this helps
