How can I create a macro, or something resembling a macro that will allow me to create letters with different headings, salutations, and closings. Closing examples,

Sincerely, then leaving four lines empty and printing my name. An example:

Sincrely,

Office 08 doesn't have internal macro capability, though you could
probably write an applescript to do that.

However, rather than doing that, why not just create several templates
that have the appropriate features, then create the document from the
templates?

In addition to what JE says, as an additional resource for use in any
context, you can select a salutation or closing and turn it into an
AutoCorrect item that can be invoked by typing an easily remembered
abbreviation of your choosing such as -- say -- dear1 or ysinc1.

Hi,

You don't need macros to accomplish this in Word.

You can do this using Mail Merge and various Word Fields. For example,
you can create a little document that's a database table (View >
toolbars > Database). In one column you could have Saluations, another
Closings, etc.

Then, using a mail merge, use that database as the data source. Mail
Merge is a wizard that inserts Word Fields. Check out the various word
Fields such as ASK, and IF so that you can create the conditions that
select the greetings and salutations you desire.
