Creating a new numbers format

I'm missing the older version capability of creating a numbers format within the Format drawdown menu. I dislike the US$ format and want to replace it, globally, with simply a $ format. Also want to create a P format for Peso currency.

How can I do this?

Thanks!

Exactly the same way you did it in all the earlier versions.
Format-Cells-Number. Select Custom from the bottom of the list and enter
your format string.

Thanks Bob, it appears I was not entirely clear. I am now doing what you have suggested. What I am looking to accomplish is to redefine - and add to - the dropdown format alternatives, not only for the worksheet I'm in but globally, for all my worksheets.

I'm working in several different currencies, and this is very important for my workflow. In addition, I really dislike the default "US$" formatting, and want to replace that with simply "$".

What you may be looking for is Format> Style, where you can modify existing
(default) Styles as well as define Styles of your own.

The Format>Style routine, for me at least, does not redefine - and add to - the dropdown format alternatives, for both the worksheet I'm in but globally, for all my worksheets.

Then you'll need to create a Workbook template file that includes the Custom
Styles and base your new workbooks on it.

I haven't tried it in '08, but I believe you may also be able to create a
custom sheet template which carries the Style & add that to the Elements
Gallery. My "expectation is" that if you can 7 add such a sheet to an
existing workbook the Style should then be available in it - I'd be
interested in your results if you try this.
