I'm stuck. i've tried numerous things to create a style that will not affect the entire paragraph. my goal is to create a style that will only apply to the highlighted word. every style i create changes the entire paragraph instead of the highlighted word. how do i accomplish my goal? i've seen that styles "heading 1, 2 and 3" affect the highlighted word and not the whole paragraph but i cannot get my created style to do the same.

There are five kinds of style: Paragraph, Character, Table, List and Theme.

A Paragraph style does affect the entire paragraph. The one you want is a
Character type style.

Look them up in the Help. Start with the topic " Format your document by
using styles" which is a training course that will get you going. Then read
the other topics offered when you search for the word "Style".

Whenever you get problems in Word, don't sit there struggling, search the
help. Life is too short to spend it in doubt :)

Hope this helps

Dear [whoever],

Further to john's comments, more information on character vs paragraph
styles is on pages 93 and 102 of some notes on the way I use Word for the
Mac, titled "Bend Word to Your Will", which are available as a free download
from the Word MVPs' website
(http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Bend/BendWordToYourWill.html).

[Note: "Bend Word to your will" is designed to be used electronically and
most subjects are self-contained dictionary-style entries. If you decide to
read more widely than the item I've referred to, it's important to read the
front end of the document -- especially pages 3 and 5 -- so you can select
some Word settings that will allow you to use the document effectively.]

Note: In Word 2008, which I don't use yet, some of the information in "Bend
Word to Your Will" may be accessible through a different interface. If
that's relevant, check back soon in case someone modifies what I've said.

Cheers,
