Creating a table of contents with character styles

D

Dan Waldo

I seem unable to create a table of contents using
character styles. When I try to modify the TOC template
the only styles available to me are paragraph styles.

Is there a workaround to this problem?

You can't (permanently) apply any direct formatting to TOC entries unless
you unlink the TOC. But entries will pick up any direct formatting applied
to the headings they represent. What are you trying to accomplish?

Whoa! I completely misread the intent of this question! But if what Dan is
looking for is a way to include paragraph sideheads,
http://home.zebra.net/~sbarnhill/RunInSidehead.htm may help. In fact, what
Word 2002 in effect does in this instance is create a type of character
style that *is* picked up by the TOC, but it's a character style based on a
paragraph style (such as Heading 1 Char).
