Creating a Table of Contents

J

Joel S.

When I attempt to make a table of contents I get an "Error! No table
of contents entries found" message. I have tried to distinguish the
items I want in the table of contents by changing the style to TOC 1.
I have used the Help option and am getting nowhere.

Thanks.

Please take a look at Word Help "About creating a table of contents",
and follow the instructions there very carefully.

TOC styles are "supposed" to be the styles that are applied to the Table
of Contents field itself, not the items in your text. You're far better
off using the built-in Header styles instead, since Word uses them by
default (see "Create a table of contents by using built-in heading
styles" in Word Help).

Clive Huggan has some suggestions on the mechanics of creating TOCs in
his free "Bending Word to Your Will":
