Creating a template

I have a file that I saved as an .xlt on a shared drive. When I test it
from my PC, the file works fine - that is, it opens, I make my changes, and
then when I hit "save", it asks me if I want to save my data and I say yes.
It then asks me to name it as an .xls file and the .xlt stays intact.

When I go to another machine and double click to open the template, it opens
as an .xlt and they can save the modify the template and save it - NOT WHAT
IS SUPPOSE TO HAPPEN! Can someone tell me what I did wrong???

Right click the file on the two computers and see what the default command is
for that file type. It should be (in bold) "Open" for xls and "New" for xlt. I
expect that on the misbehaving PC it is "Open" for both.

Just to add to Dave's response...

If you rightclick on that file in windows explorer, do you see Open in bold or
New in bold?

If you see Open in bold, then the first thing I'd try is to reregister excel.

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

Then test it out.

If that doesn't work...

Close excel
start windows explorer
tools|folder options|file types tab
scroll down to the xlt extension (microsoft excel worksheet)
click the advanced button
click on the New item in the Actions box
click set as default
(ok your way out)
