Creating a TOC of my own style

Having a TOC with several numbered heading levels, I would like to keep the
numbers left aligned, but use different indents for the text portions.
Is that possible in Word 2k ?

You can customize all TOC styles. In Format | Style, select TOC 2, TOC 3,
etc., and set the indents you prefer.

Well, I've tried - but I cannot indent only the text portion of the line.
The heading number will also be indented.

If I apply a hanging indent on e.g. the third heading level, it affects also
level 1 and 2.

Will it still be recognised as a TOC, e.g. if I use Adobe's PDFmakerA to
create a PDF-version and want the hyperlinks to appear also in the
PDF-version ?

It will still *be* a TOC, as long as it is a TOC field with TOC-style
entries. But you can customize any of the TOC styles to suit. I wasn't
suggesting you unlink the field (that is, I didn't mean to turn off updating
in that sense), but TOC styles are set to "Automatically update" (see Format
| Style | Modify) so that when you make a change in one TOC entry, all the
other entries at that level are changed because the style itself is updated.
I still can't see why that would affect any other level, so I was grasping
at straws.

After hours of struggeling, I've finally managed to master the TOC layout.
Thanks for your assistance!
