Creating a word document template

I want to create a template for a construction spec sheet. I need to be able
to tab from one blank to the next to input the variable data. I have
followed the instructions for creating a template from an existing document,
but I can't see where it does anything. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for
any much-needed assistance.
