creating contents pages for different sections

I have 6 separate documents that I have to collate into one document
with a general contents page, and also, separate contents pages for
each section, or chapter.
Each section must have a footer that reflects the section and the page
numbers must be concurrent throughout the document.
Any clues?

Hi Annette:

Give me a ring: I am in Sydney. Number is in the .sig.

In the Help, look up "RD Fields" (Referenced Document fields), "TOC Fields",
and "StyleRef" fields. You also need to look up "Format Page Number". Bill
Coan has some good stuff here:

Do this homework before you ring, there will be a test!!! :)

In Word 2008 there is no Help for fields, you have to try to insert the
Field you want, then it will tell you what the switches are.

What you need to do is either combine all of the documents into a single
document, or use RD fields to call them in for the TOC.

If you use RD fields you have to Lock Result on the Chapter TOC fields, and
you have to set the page number starting point in each file.

If you combine into a single document, you need to use \b "bookmark"
switches to constrain the Chapter TOCs, but the page numbers will look after
themselves.

Tell whoever wants the Section added to the page number to take a powder!
It confuses the hell out of readers and does not help you.

But it's easy enough to do if they won't listen to good sense: you must have
formatted the Chapter heading with one of Word's built-in "Heading..."
series of styles (normally, "Heading 1") and you must have associated List
Numbering with the Heading series of styles using the Shauna Kelly method
(www.shaunakelly.com).

If you have an adequate machine for professional document work (Intel
processor, 2 GB of memory...) then the long single document is a far, far
easier approach. Combine the documents and it will all just work without a
raft of problems.

gone out to pasture!
I have combined all documents into a single document and used section
breaks for each one (they each have a different footer).
Am still working my way to the contents pages problems ... I may give
you a call if it gets to me.

{Chortle} Yeah, that's what I always do, too.

You don't really need to get serious with it until the document exceeds
about 2,500 pages. It will slow down a bit, but Word should keep going up
to about 5,000 pages if you are patient and careful.
