i'd like to create access for the company help desk to assist me with support
tasks in Project Server 2003, such as checking in projects.

any suggestions on how to create this level of access without providing too
many permissions?

many thaniks.

It would help if we had more of an idea of what you want them to do. For
example, will they use Microsoft Project Professional or only PWA in their
duties to assist you? Regardless, you can create a new Group, add the Help
Desk users, include the My Organization category, and set the permissions in
both the Permissions grid and Global Permissions grid using the
Administrator security template. From there, you can deselect the Allow
permissions for anything you don't want the Help Desk people to do in both
permissions grids. Hope this helps.

Thanks Dale. That was my general approach, I've had trouble getting the
permissions right, but your assistance gives me confidence that I'm on the
right track.

My hope is that the help desk folks will only use PWA for very limited
assistance to my project managers. The primary issue I have is project
managers losing connectivity when the network/wireless/VPN goes down. This
leaves their projects open on the server, but they are unable to get back
in...

You will need to give your Help Desk people at the Manage Enterprise
Features permission. Hope this helps.

If the only issue that you are trying to address with this is checking in
projects, there is a function that allows the PM's to check in their own
projects. Enabling this and training your PM's may negate the need to have
your help desk involved.

How is it enabled Renee?

Thanks!
