creating hosts files with G5

Mark

i am wantingto set up a mail account on a G5 using Outlook 2001 running
under classic.

I have a G4 powerbook and am able to change the Hosts file by booting up
in OS9.2 and changing the host file there. But on the G5 i cannot do
this.

My question therefore is how do you get it to recognise a different host
file when you cannot get to the os when running 10.2.7 (and you cannot
boot from it on the G5

any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi Mark!

Locate these two files on your G4

Hosts (typically somewhere in the System Folder, but not necessarily)
TCP/IP Preferences (found in System Folder --> Preferences)

Copy them to the same locations on your G5. Your TCP/IP Preferences file
stores the location of your Hosts file. As long as your Hosts file is in the
same place, your new G5 will find it. This assumes that you are obtaining an
IP address via DHCP. If you're hard-coding an IP address, set up your G4
with all the information for the G5 and then copy the files.

Hope this helps! bill
