Creating Index - after saving unable to open document

I have a Word 2007 document that I have tried creating an Index for. It
creates the index without any problems, however, after I save it and close it
and then try to reopen it, I get the following error.

The Office Open XML file VLT Interface Control II-06_20_2007_With Index
cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents. The details
show "Unspecified error" Location: Part:/word/document.xml, Line: 2, Column:
354777.

Has anyone ever seen this and if so, how do I fix it? I need an Index in
this document.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Susan,

I am not able to send the document as it is a proprietary document and is
not allowed to leave the building - it is work related. Any suggestions on
what to look at?

I don't have a lot of ideas.

Try different index options - change all of the settings in the dialog
(columns, etc) to see if any one of them in particular is causing a problem.
What do your xe fields look like? Are they just {xe "whatever"} or do they
have other switches?

I have played around with changing the settings and get the same results.
The words that are marked for the index are just marked as {xe... - no
special switches}

I even created another word document with some of the words that I want in
the index - it's a fairly small list, with about 15 words in it and imported
that to create/generate the index....with the same results.

I am not really sure what is going on here. I have tried to download
updates but it says that I have to have my Office verified...and when I do
that, it says I have an "illegal copy" - for which I am sure I do not - I
registered my copy. So that is another issue I am having.

Can you send the simple example document?
Try making the simple document after renaming Normal.dotm
Start | Run
%appdata%
look in Microsoft\Templates
and rename normal.dotm to something like 1normal.dotm

Thank you for your help....after two days of playing around with it, I have
found that when I save the document, in order for me to be able to reopen it,
I have to save it as a "Word 97-2003 Document".

Not sure why this works...but it does. Thank you for your help.

I have had the same problem. Were you able to recover your document?? I
have a large document that I can't open.

Thanks,

I was able to resolve it. Luckily I had a copy of the original document
before I added the index. I opened that document and created my index and
then saved it as a Word 97-2003 document. I was NOT able to recover the
original document, however, I did not try to change the properties on it as I
had the original one and just started the index over.

Good luck with your document. I know how frustrating it is to not be able
to open it up after you have worked on it for so long. My document was over
200 pages and I was really paniced that I would loose it.

I have exactly the same problem that Deb C initially wrote about, using word
2007. 1) make an index (i used an external file for the list of terms), 2)
save file, and 3) cannot reopen file. Here is the error messsage: The Office
Open XML file (file name.docx) cannot be opened because there are problems
with the contents. Unspecified error, location: Part:/word/document.xml,
Line:2, Column: 391501.

This does not happen every time, and i initially thought related to the
..docx version of my index words file (we used to call these concordance files
- but microsoft has no refernece to them in the help file now). So, i saved
the index words file as .doc, and that seemed to be the same problem - mostly
freezes the file but sometimes works.

From the suggestions by Susan Baker and comments of Deb C, it looks like the
solution is to save the file as a .doc (and it also looks like this is a
major bug that microsoft should address). I hate to go back to .doc as i am
using the bibliographic feature of word 2007. However, if this is the only
current solution i can start saving as .doc

Are there any other suggestions on dealing with this problem of indexing?

Roger
