Creating linked dropdowns

I want to create a set of 2 dropdowns (ideally driven by Active Directory)
where I can drill down into a subset of people based on location, and then
choose one person in that location in a second dropdown.

how should i go about that, is that possible out-of-the-box?

This is termed "cascading" drop downs.

You can find several tutorials on http://www.infopathdev.com search on
cascading.

Also there is an Active Directory web service for getting all of your AD
information from.

When using InfoPath Forms, Cascading Dropdown are not possible out of
the box, as filtered data feature is not accepted.
This is what Microsoft Says
