Creating my own design template

I was wondering if someone could tell me how to go about creating my own
powerpoint slide design? I know what i want it to look like but don't know if
i can design it myself?

Thanks so much for that Glenna.

I can see how i can put it together now but i need to design the backgroud.
Is there a facility for me to do that and what software would be most
suitable for that? Or is there a website that has a selection of backgrounds
that i can download?
