Creating new drawings from floor plans.

I use visio to draw pre-fire plans. Often, I have a floor plan available.
Is it possible to scan this floor plan into visio, assign layers and then
manipulate the drawing as necessary to complete a pre-fire plan. So far, I
have been pasting the floor plans into visio as a picture file. However, I
am not able to manipulate the floor plan at all. Any advise is appreciated.

There is not much that you can do with an image file, but if you use software
that converts a scan into a CAD file, usually dxf (see
http://www.softcover.com/ for example), then you can assign layers, which you
can switch off/on, assign color, etc.
Visio can import or embed dxf files, though you may have some trouble
getting the scale correct at first. If you have a choice of version of dxf,
then choose 10 for best results in Visio.
