creating new shapes

I know this seems a bit basic but I can't find how to create a new shape.

I want to create a shape like a polaroid photo into which I can insert a
photo and add text in the white band at the bottom.

Can anyone start me off, please?

John Marshall site has a list of references (www.mvps.org/visio). I'd
suggest David Edson's book as a starter if you plan to get into Visio at
all. There are also the VisioIsideOut books.

Draw your desired shape using any program and copy paste to Visio page or
draw using any Visio tools. Select all, group, drag group to a stencil and
say yes to "modify stencil to add as an object"....or start a new stencil
and drag it onto the new stencil and save the stencil to your hard drive.

OK, that kind of worked except that the shapes don't remain stuck together
after I drag them back to the document from the stencil. I'd like to add
text to it too but that option doesn't seem to be available.
