Creating new template - "trusted template"?

I'm trying to create a template from a document (which I've done before in
windows 97).
I can save it as a Word Template (.dotx) easily enough; but then it doesn't
appear in the list of templates when I open a New file.
The Help file says I should choose the "Trusted Templates" in the Save As
dialog box. But there is no "Trusted Templates" option.

I presume I am doing something wrong, but I have no idea what.
Any suggestions?

You have to place the template in the User Templates folder. This folder is
in your user profile, which usually means something like this: C:\Documents
and Settings\<user_name_here>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates. For the
exact location, look in the File Locations dialog box.

To open the File Locations dialog box: Click Office button | Word Options,
Advanced category. Click the File Locations button.

Thanks Stefan. This has worked after a fashion. The folder was actually
....\Application Data\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates. (Is this "Roaming" a Vista
thing by any chance?).
I can now access it via the "My templates" choice on the left of the "New"
window - in the "recently used" list (if recently used that is, of course...
;-) ).

Do you know a way I can (a) get it to appear under the "Blank and recent"
category (to save me a key press); or (b) clean up the "Recently Used"
window, which contains some I downloaded by mistake and won't use?

"AppData\Roaming" is the Vista equivalent of the "Application Data" folder
in XP and earlier. If you actually have "Application Data\Roaming" as you
say, then you have a customized installation.

If you right click on icons in the Recently Used Pane you should be able to
delete individual templates from there.
