creating numbered list style that WORKS in .dot template

I'm creating a template, have made all the major styles (including the
outline styles). Everything works except the numbered list style, which I
cannot figure out.

I've made a style, based it on the existing "List Number" style, and change
nothing else. This is my current Numbered List for the template.

When I apply this style to content text, it works normally the first time.
If I apply the style to a second list, it makes this second list continuous
with the first as far as the numbering goes. Below is an example of what
happens in a .doc file based on my template.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.0 CHAPTER ONE - THE PROBLEM

1.1 SECTION ONE - WHEN IT WORKS

The following items are included in XYZ concept:
1. first item, number one
2. second item, number two
3. third item, number three

Those items are awesome. etc etc.

1.2 SECTION TWO - WHEN IT DOESN'T

The following items are included in ABC concept:
4. first item, SHOULD be number one
5. second item, SHOULD be number two
6. third item, SHOULD be number three
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I click restart numbering on the #4, and then hit ctrl-z, it will
restart. It seems like I have to undo some autoformatting to get it to
restart, if I don't push control z, the restart numbering action doesn't do
anything.

If I make ANY change to the list/document after it has restarted, ALL of the
lists will revert back to continuous.

Main point: how do I correctly create a numbered list style that allows me
to have multiple numbered lists in the document.

The fact that you have to use undo to get what you want, means there's some
autoformatting going on. Clearing all the list-related checkboxes, including
"set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces" (which you'll find on
the autoformat as you type tab of the AutoCorrect dialog) should help. I
can't check right now how to get there in W2003 & before. Write back if you
need help.

If this solves the problem, you may have to tell users to set their
preferences the same way.
