creating page banner & navigation bar

I'd like some tips on how to create a custom-designed page banner and
navigation bar for our website. I don't want to use the templates that are
provided with the program. Any ideas?

I use Xara Webstyle http://www.paddy3.com/ which is quite good. It is not a
freebee though!!
