Creating rules

I want to automatically take any received email from one friend and redirect it to another friend using rules. I am able to set up the rule, but it does not work automatically. Instead, I must apply the rule manually to each message by selecting the received email, then going to Message/Apply Rule. Is there a way to get the rule to apply automatically when the message is received?

rules are applied in the order in which they are listed.

Assuming that you have checked that the rule is active (it has a check mark
against it in the list of rules), then the most likely cause is that a rule
higher up the listing is operating first and preventing the action of later
rules. Open up any rule higher in the list that may have operated on the
messages and check that the checkbox at the bottom of the rules editing
dialog is set to allow further rules to operate. If a rule moves a message
you cannot let further rules act on a message. In this case your only option
is to move your response rule further up the list.

In addition to that, you may also want to confirm that you've created the
rule under the correct heading. Entourage keeps separate rule-sets for
different types of accounts, so if you've created a rule under the "Mail
(POP)" heading (which is the default section) it will not apply to messages
received from IMAP or Exchange accounts.
