creating several files like NORMAL.DOT

I have modified the startup appearance of Word 2003 by tweaking
NORMAL.DOT in
%PROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

How do I create similar templates (if that is what it is properly
called) so I can load one of those and have an alternative document
layout?
