You can automatically update Styles if Styles were used in the "old"
document, but it is highly unlikely that you did that. The best bet is to
create your template with the Styles you want to use. I usually create a
toolbar in my template with the desired Styles as icons on a toolbar. I
then attach the template to the document by clicking "Tools", "Templates and
add-ins", clicking the "Attach" button, browse to my template I just
created, select it, then click "OK". I would then need to either do a "Find
and replace" of a particular Font setting and replace it with the desired
Style.
Keep in mind that if you used nothing but the "Normal" Style in your old
document, how would Word know what to update what with?
Hope this helps.

Can I create a Theme that would contain all the style formatting? I want
to be able to pull up an old document, apply the theme and have it override
all the old formating with the new. Is this possible in Word?
