Creating timelines

I have created a list of dates and events in Excel. I would like to import them into a timeline. Can I do this in Excel? Or is there another software system out there that I should be using. I am not looking for a Gantt chart, but a timeline - you know, like the kind you see in National Geographic or something.

I really *don't* know, since I've seen dozens of "timelines" in National
Geographic "or something">, but perhaps the template found here may be
