I am able to download the "critical" update but then it comes up with a message saying that it is unable to install the update because I don't have the necessary software to do the installation. Excuse my ignorance but what extra software is required and where can I get it?

Hi Colette -

I'm afraid it's impossible to tell you what you need unless you tell us what
you have:) There are currently 4 possible builds of Office 2008 - 12.0,
12.0.1, 12.1.0, & 12.1.1 - and I've not seen the word "critical" used in
conjunction with any of the updates. There's also a required update to the
AutoUpdate application itself, so that may be what you're missing.

If you aren't sure check in the [application name] menu of one of the Office
apps & select About [application name]. In general:

You can go directly from 12.0 to SP1 (12.1.0) without applying 12.0.1,
but...

You need AutoUpdate 2.1.1 in order to apply the SP1 (12.1.0) update.

SP1 must be applied before you can apply the 12.1.1 update.

There have been some users who have had problems getting the updates
applied, but the fixes vary with the exact update involved & the specifics
of the failure. We need explicit details in order to assist.
