Cross-platform styles

I'm writing for a client using Mac Word 2004. For review I'm sending
it to someone on a PC - who actually has two computers. One has Word
2000, and one has a new version. (Don't know for sure.)
Also sending to QA person on Windows XP with Word 2000.

1. Can they use my .dot template?
1a: what happens when they don't have the font I'm using?
2. Often the docs come back to me with styles changed. I'm assuming
that is because the have "update style based on formatting" checked.
Think I fixed that this morning. Is that why?
3. Often, after getting the file back from either of these people, I
can't get my template/style to apply even though it says it is right.
I've learned to "clear formatting" and reapply style. Is that the only
route?

thanks for answers. I haven't found anythign that would answer it.
