Cross-Post / Cross Reference Problem - HELP!

DC

I am creating a document with cross references to other document sections:
eg, Section 5.14

When I insert the cross reference: Insert / References / Cross reference,
and select the parapgraph that I want to refer to, I get either Section 0 or
Section db, when I should get Section 5.14? This happens on all references.

I've tried using headers, full context, headers only, paragraph,
etc...nothing is working.

The document is styled properly. And we do use Payne Numbering.

Any suggestions?

Please help! I've been seeking an answer for 3 weeks and have come up empty
so far.

Are the references to parts within the same document, or in other documents?

If these references are within a single document, what happens if you
bookmark a numbered item you want to refer to, then insert a reference to
that bookmark?

For example, select the text "Section 5.14", and choose Insert - Bookmark,
and give it a name (e.g., DoesThisWork). Then, go where you want a reference
to that number to appear, press Ctrl+F9, type the bookmark name (e.g.
DoesThisWork) between the field braces, then press F9 to display the field
results. Is the reference correct now?

If the reference is to a numbered item in another document, it's a little
more involved. The contents of the field would be something like:

{ INCLUDETEXT "C:\\Documents\\Section 5.doc" DoesThisWork }

assuming the the referenced number is located in the file indicated. You can
insert this using the menu using Insert-File, setting Range equal to the
referenced bookmark, and choose Insert as Link.

The point here is not necesarily to give you a different method (although I
do find this method more reliable than the method that Word uses). It's to
see if the basic mechanism is working.

Hi Herb
Thank you for responding

These references are part of the same document. I haven't tried to bookmark
them as of yet. I used the Insert Reference feature of Word only. However,
I will try your suggestions below.

Thanks :)

Herb,

Tried your suggestion, and the book mark does place the reference in the
location I desire.

So, this test works, insofar as the functionality is there. Not sure why
cross-reference isn't functioning properly, but I supoosed I can use this a a
backup/work around.

If you or any one else can think of anything else that may be helpful, I'd
appreciate it.

Thank you

Are you by any chance selecting anything at the position where you want
to insert the Cross-Reference? Your cursor should just be sitting at a
blank spot and then insert the Cross-Reference.

In addition, so far, you cannot Cross-Reference automatic numbering in
a right-column table in Word. These must be a ListNum field in order
for the Cross-Referencing to work properly otherwise you will also get
a zero.

Hi Blue
I did highlight the number portion of the section; for instance, Section
5.14 (I highlighted the 5.14 part) and then inserted the reference.

I "think" the paragraphs are styled to outline number, however, I have to
check.

I will let you k now how I make out.
