Cross project linking

Hello,

Could we link the milestones between various project
schedules without allowing the publishing of master
projects to the Server? (since doing so is problematic,
according to Gary Chefetz in "Implementing Enterprise
Portfolio Management With MS Project Server 2002", p.170)

Thank you in advance.

I think there are multiple ways to do it, this is my
preference:

1. Open the two (or three, four, ...) projects
2. Select Window->New Window
3. Select all the projects that you need to link, choose
Gantt Chart for the view, and click OK
4. Create the links as you normally would in a project
5. Close and save the new window.

You should now see external tasks or milestone in your
projects.

Thanks Matt !

This makes linking a lot easier. Though, you should not
save or publish the new combined master project to the
server as it results in resource double booking. Make a
local copy. This I've been told by these MVP -gurus...

We've been able to link milestones between various
projects without publishing the master project to the
server. The master project is saved on our LAN as a .mpp
file (Use Save As.. funtion). The individual projects
stored in our repository (server) are where we make the
cross-project connections. Our master is used strictly
for viewing these milestone dependencies, not for any
normal project changes. The only problem I've seen at
this point is that I'm not able to quickly see any
dependency violations. It seems as if the tool is "doing
the fixing" for me, which is causing dates to shift
without me knowing first. If you know of a way to make
the date "stick" until I make it move out, you'd be my
hero!

Good luck! It's definitely not a fun process but one that
is workable.

Thank you C for the clarification. I myself is new to
this product, I really wish I could suggest a way to make
the date stick or at least warn you in advance. I guess
the gurus in MS Project could have some advice on this.
Regards.
