cross ref to figure number only

In Word 2004 is there any way to make a cross reference to ONLY the
number of a figure or table.

I want to have numbers in the following phrase as updateable cross
references:

"....as illustrated in Figures 2, 3, 4 and 6 "

It doesn't sound like an unreasonable request, but I cannot see how to
do this without ending up with:

"....as illustrated in Figure 2, Figure 3, Figure 4 and Figure 6"

which is not only clumsy but also unacceptable to my client.

ideas?

The only suggestion I can offer is to select the word "Figure" in each of
the cross-reference occurrences where you don't want the word to display &
use Format>Font - Hidden. If there are more than just a few instances you
can use Find & Replace. Perhaps someone else has other thoughts, so check
back for more ideas.

I found reference to another solution here:

http://groups.google.com/group/micr...38/eab798f49288438e?lnk=raot#eab798f49288438e

This somehow sounds familiar and I recall doing something similar to
this in Word 6 for OS 8, but it isnt exactly user friendly. I seem to
recall that it got comlplicated (for my limited capacity!) when you
needed to have 2 counts going in the same doc (ie one for Tables and
another for Figures).

Now where's that URL for suggesting improvements to MS products....?

Yes, that's the one. What he is doing there is inserting the caption as
normal.

When Word inserts a caption using the Insert Caption command, it inserts a
SEQ field automatically.

All you need to do is select the number and insert a bookmark. Name it
something obvious so you can see what you are doing.

You then insert a cross-reference simply to the bookmark.

Cheers

Hey Clive -

I thought it was right slick, but never expected it to be "new" to anyone :)
