cross reference a figure in another subdocument and ...

Hi All, I am writing my thesis and have five chapters. I created
five subdocuments for each chapter and a master document
using the same template (Office XP). My questions are:
1) In chapter 2, I want to cross reference to a figure in chapter 1,
how can I do this? I know I can do everything in the master with all
five subdocs available, but after I do this, go back to chapter 2,
and update it, I got some error message. How can I get away this?
I think I can use bookmark, but there will be tedious work if I
have huge amount of cross-references going between chapters and chapters.
2) If I need to move all my subdocs to another computer, do I need to
change the path in the master?

General advice from the experts is that putting all chapters (if you have
chapters) in one document as different sections (not always necessary), and
using styles and headings properly, works fine for long documents.
