Cross Reference Equals Zero

Does anyone know why a cross reference turns to 0 (zero)
if only the cross referenced paragraph number (and not the
entire paragraph) is deleted?

If I delete the entire cross-referenced paragraph then the
updated cross reference will rightly say "Error Reference
Source Not Found."

This is very puzzling. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Brian

Sounds logical to me - the reference is to the paragraph (which still
exists). The format is to show the paragraph number, which now is none ?
