Cross-reference number to picture, table, equation without label?

Aleš

Hi,

is it possible to insert a cross-reference number to picture, table,
equation without label? The combo-box "Insert reference to" has an option
"Only label and number",
but I need "Only number".

Aleš

You can do this manually, by first adding a bookmark enclosing the caption
number only, and then inserting a cross-reference to the bookmark.

Hi Stefan,

thank you for your helpful answer. I tried something similar before
but I must have done it wrong. Now it works perfectly!

Thanks again,
Aleš

Aleš: in addition to Stephan's suggestion, you can also do this by editing
the field code of the cross-reference.
Create cross-reference as normal (Label and number), select the field,
SHFT+F9 to toggle the field code, you will see some thing like:
{ REF _Ref237057119 \h }
and a \# 0 as below:
{ REF _Ref237057119 \h \# 0}
be consciuous of the spaces.
Now press Shft+F9 again and you should only have the number displaid.
Hope this helps

Indeed, but unless cross-references to (say) "Only label and number" have
already
been added to the document, creating your own bookmarks will be easier.

Hi Charlie.
I have noticed this sometimes myself and cannot explain how/why this happens.
Usually the addition of "\# 0" to the field works well. When I do see just a
0 I tend to recreate the cross-reference from scratch and it seems to work
fine from then on.
Question, is the "F." your own custom label?

I tried it again and it still doesn't work. I'll just use a bookmark when I
need just the figure number. Sure would be nice if MS allowed "number only"
as an option.

The F. is the section number. Figures are numbered consectuively in each
section...A.1, A.2... in section A and B.1, B.2... in section B, etc.

Thanks,

Charlie, sorry to hear it has not worked for you. As I said previously, why
and how this happens is a mystery, well to me anyway ;-)
Have a look at the following article which is where I found this little
trick. One thing I have noticed is the order of the switches, not sure if
this may hinder the operation?
"\h \# 0" vs. "\# 0 \h"

Oh, OK "Include chapter number" for the "F." phew I thought there was
something wrong with your labeling.
A "number only" option would be very nice and I believe it has been
mentioned in this newsgroup before; maybe 2010 has it? Any 2010 beta users
out there that can jump in here?

All the best
